Disposition: When the game first introduces Ann, she is quiet and subdued, trapped in a situation she feels powerless to escape from. She’s reluctant to speak to the protagonist, at first running away from him rather than letting him see her vulnerable. It’s only his persistence and a little luck that gets her to open up — and it’s obvious that she feels sad and alone and frustrated by her own helplessness.
Once she accidentally stumbles into Kamoshida’s Palace and awakens her persona, she starts to reveal her stubbornness and determination. Much of her motivation for stealing Kamoshida’s heart comes from a place of revenge and anger — she’s the type of person to get swept up in the heat of the moment rather than stand back and make cold calculations, and she becomes hellbent on changing Kamoshida's heart and making him pay for his actions.
This also reveals a more vengeful side to her. The protagonist and Ryuji ultimately leave Kamoshida’s fate up to Ann, and while she does spare his life, she comments that she only did it so he would spend the rest of his life suffering for what he did. When Ann and the people she cares about have been wronged, she doesn’t hesitate to take justice into her own hands. Ultimately, Ann becomes a founding member of the Phantom Thieves so that she can punish those who are abusing their power and save others from becoming victims like herself, and this motivation is what drives her for the rest of the game.
After Kamoshida’s change of heart is successful, her true personality finally shines through. In contrast to before, she’s revealed to be very outgoing, friendly, and fun. She’s upbeat and ultimately an optimistic person — in spite of Kamoshida’s treatment of her, she learns to move on and not let him hold onto his power over her.
She’s also an emotional person, quick to anger but also quick to laugh and forgive — it’s especially evident when she interacts with Ryuji, who she scolds and teases in equal measure. This volatility can have unexpected consequences — in her confidant, for example, a rival in the modelling world who challenges her top spot riles her up enough to get her to exercise and watch what she eats… two things she would normally never do.
It’s this stubbornness that doesn’t allow her to take any shit from anybody, and to call out others when they’re being jerks. She also calls out others when they’re being perverts too, and it’s obvious that she doesn’t like being ogled — she complains quite a few times about her catsuit costume as a Phantom Thief. When she’s in control of it herself, however, it’s a slightly different story, and she doesn’t seem to have a problem with trying to use her good looks to her advantage when it suits her, such as when she tries to convince Ryuji to train her with promises of a date. (It doesn’t work.)
In spite of her volatility, she's a kind and caring person at her core. She’s empathetic of others, especially those who have been made victims just like she was, and she’s supportive of people who need help. For instance, even though Makoto did nothing to help her or Shiho even though she was arguably in a position to, Ann is still quick to forgive the other girl — rather than hold onto her resentment, Ann recognizes that Makoto was in a terrible situation as well. As other girls join the Phantom Thieves, she’s always there to welcome them and support them where they need it.
In spite of her emotional maturity, she can be a bit airheaded and ditzy at times. For instance, she seems completely oblivious to the fact that she’s terrible at lying, and therefore a very unconvincing actress — this doesn’t stop her from declaring that she wants to become an action movie star. A few confidant rank ups later, however, she’s completely forgotten about that, and switches back to wanting to be the best model in the world. Also, an anime villain.
It’s in this and other ways that Ann reveals herself to be a pretty typical teenage girl, all in all. She loves to eat (especially desserts), go shopping, and watch romantic movies. It’s obvious that she didn’t have many friends before Shiho or the Phantom Thieves, judging by her surprise that her classmates actually want to hang out with her in Hawaii, which can lead to her being a little awkward in some social situations (especially romantic ones), but she’s always well-meaning.
Suitability: As mentioned in the section above, Ann is very stubborn and emotionally and mentally resilient. She's been through trauma and come out of it with greater strength, empathy, and persistence, and she's always motivated by a strong sense of justice and morality. When under pressure, she can definitely react impulsively and emotionally, but after her initial reaction, and given some time to calm down, she's much more mature. Her kindness and compassion will always shine through in the end.
In the game, this will translate to an obstinance in persisting through whatever is thrown at her. Because she's naturally extroverted and personable, she'll be able to make friends that she's determined to help and support — this will be a major motivation for her.
